Hi I am Ysabelle Vautour I am a visually impaired artist living in NB the land of peace and friendship. For this residency I am experimenting with visually depicting ideas around disability. ⁠

The photo was taken by another disabled artist named Rachel Watters as part of a photo voice project in Rachel’s Masters Thesis on Disability in the Media. We worked in collaboration. I wanted to depict the idea of a poster child for disability. ⁠

Here I took strange selfies trying to show my blind perspective.

Photo of Ysabelle she is facing us but she is holding a book that hides her face. It's so close to her face that it obscures our view of her. The book is called Poets and Killers: A life in Advertising ⁠

If I don’t use my visual aids, I pass as abled. So, how do I visualize something invisible? While I at times use aides to help me see, these aides do not define me but they to signal part of my disabled identity. After gathering my tools I started making still life’s with them. 

On a wooded table we see a pair of sunglasses next for a small trophy that has an eye inside the cup of the trophy. The eyeball as the CNIB printed on it. ⁠ ⁠
Here we have a book called "Surviving Depression with Art Therapy" on top of the book stands a slump over dejected wooded figurine used for art with part of it's leg missing. ⁠

Why can’t the white cane be seen more creatively like could you imagine it would be a stick you could fight with? ⁠

Here we have a drawing of 2 figures that appear to be fighting with canes. The figures look like the symbol that we use for a blind person. The background is black while the figure and canes are white. ⁠
Quick sketches in black marker on posted notes of silouettes of the wheelchair symbol commonly seen to indicate things like accessible parking for example. The figures seem to have personality one is looking festive with hat and confetti around him. One looks like she is singing with a microphone another is playing the drums one looks like she is in a more athletic wheel chair⁠

tactile / textile painting ⁠ ⁠ Different types of textiles are draped in lines so you can touch time. Cotton, Flannel, rayon, silk ect there is a triangle shape in the middle with a tassel on the end of it. The material has different colours and patterns on them. kind of looks like an envelope made of fabric ⁠

Ysabelle Vautour

Ysabelle Vautour is the founder of the NB Disability Art Collective. She serves on the board of Arts NB.

Her practice revolves around the connection between the physical navigation of space and the emotional experience of the world.

Ysabelle is an alumna of Festival Inspire Muralist Training Program, Sync Leadership and Catapult Art Accelerator.

She has also served as the artist residence at the Fredericton Arts Alliance, Fredericton Botanical Gardens, Connexion Artist Run Center and Hammock Residency in Vancouver.

Recipient of the Jane Leblanc Award in Visual Arts. She stars in the AMI television documentary !00% Passion.
