Network Of Domestic Spaces

    While in Portland, I met the mysterious founder of NoDs: an amazing networker of domestic spaces!  Below, is a description in her own words:

    “NoDS is an investigation of two simple things: People and Spaces. It is also about the complex relationships between, within and amongst these people and spaces. 

    NoDS was formed to promote, facilitate and expose creative initiatives on the domestic front; to bring everyone closer together in the process, regardless of physical proximity or material discipline, and to examine the drywall, brick or concrete barriers between private and public space, maybe even knocking some of them down during the process.

    NoDS is dedicated to the unconventional and uninstitutional as space for artistic creation and display. Moving institutionalized artist residency into people’s homes helps all of us reconsider the walls we’ve built up between the private and the public, the domestic and institutional, mine and yours, home and away.”

    Solder & Sons

    There has been a very special set up for the Hammock Residency. In exchange for a Monday shift of coffee creations, music, and book sales at Solder & Sons, there is a summer studio for music and writing!  

    Joomi Seo and I have been given the go-ahead to use this space for music, especially for Joomi’s Hammock Residency and our new music project.  Many thanks to Robert Douglas Pedersen, the man behind this epic trade of perpetual prosperity.

    Jake Hardy aka Holzkopf – January 2014 to December 2015

    Jake Hardy is Holtzkopf and Nervous Operator, a force in Vancouver’s underground noise and breakcore scene. Always inventing something new, he is impossible to keep up with. In the Hammock Residency he is working on writing down some of his tour experiences, as he has travelled across Europe several times, each one performing in alternate spaces, and unique environments. Jake holds a real time map to third spaces, and the magic they hold.  

    He shared some of his in-process writings with us at the Vancouver Art/Book Fair in 2014, in the Hammock Library Installation. The audience was interactive and full of questions for him and his work. 

    Sylvie Ringer – May to Oct, 2015


    Sylvie Ringer is a painter and illustrator from Hamburg, Germany. She was born in Kamploops, BC, and has strong ties to Malcolm Island, a remote island in North Vancouver Island. She came to Canada to explore her heritage, as she moved to Germany as a small child with her family.

    Drawing and Storytelling: create your own zine!

    a workshop by Sylvie Ringer

    Everyone has a story to tell. An incident you want to remember, a dream, your life story, a moment, fiction, nonsense, simply forms and shapes , inner journey, how you got your dog….

    In this workshop we draw and bind our one little zine/book of a story or stories. Finding symbols, a graphic language to express and capture whatever it is we want to remember or share. We decide on a subject or work intuitively, draw and in the end sew together a little zine.

    Drawing is about being in the moment. It is the oldest language we have. Finding joy in expressing yourself in a playful and very unique way (because nobody draws like another) and using a language of shapes and lines to transport what you feel or want to say. Besides finding peace in the moment drawing can also feel healing, when you go back to something and revisits negative emotions and find shapes or images for them.

    We learn basics of how to approach drawing, the use of color, structure, drawing what you see, not what you think you see. Then we learn about storytelling in images, what do I need to show to express what I want.

    A story can also be told in a single image, for whom the idea of a book is too much.
