Charlie aka A Raven Named Crow – October 2014 to January 2015

    Charlie rented out the Hammock studio room and made it their own. It was supposed to be just a strictly studio space, but when Charlie’s home situation fell through they ended up living there. It was all at the same time of Bennie Allain’s residency, and the three of us had great fun getting up to no good making art all night. Charlie and Bennie being both drawers, painters and musicians had many overlaps in their practice, and inspired one another. Charlie also did projections, large scale puppetry, and installations. 

    Repurposing Bailing Ties with Gaye Chan (cancelled)

    Gaye Chan is an artist from Hawaii who runs the Gleaner’s Feast, and various share stations, run on the gift economy. She was in Vancouver for a summer, and we met, and she had been gleaning Tie Bales from various factories and shipping yards across the city, and repurposing them by weaving them into baskets. She was going to share her weaving skills with us, but something happened and the event got cancelled. I had a few of her baling ties in my studio for years after, as a tribute to her unique style of locally based art. If you went to one of the parks around Commercial Drive, you would have seen some of her baskets made, and installed with doggie bags for folks with pets.

    Hammock Thoughts Vol 2 – 2014

    Hammock Thoughts, vol 2 was published in 2014. A call out was made to all the Hammock Residents, past and present and asked for new proposals for the project. The book was re-designed by Ella Collier and published through Hammock Residency Press, as a small run of 50. It was launched at the Vancouver Art/Book Fair 2014. 

    This process was repeated for Hammock Thoughts: With Love From The Hammock, 2006-2014, affectionately called “Hammock Thoughts, Volume 2”. This work was published through Hammock Residency Press, and was our first publication. When I sent the email out to the Hammock Residnecy alumni in 2014, this time I added, to confirm if they wanted to keep their previous work from 2013 included, if they wanted to remove the work, or if they wanted to submit a new work. The new work could be included as an insert, or in the published pages, like the 2013 publication.

    Ella Collier designed and edited Hammock Thoughts: With Love From The Hammock, 2006-2014, in a back and forth process with myself. Ella and I had known each other from previous Hammock Residency events, Emily Carr University of Art + Design, the Vancouver art scene, and the local queer scene. Publishing it through Hammock Residnecy Press was easier than expected, with a small run of 50. Hammock Residency tabled at the Vancouver Art/Book Fair 2014 to release the publication, and sold out again.

    Between the two publications, Hammock Thoughts: With Love From The Hammock Residency, is carried in the libraries of: Emily Carr University of Art + Design (Vancouver), Simon Fraser University (Vancouver), Vancouver Art Gallery (Vancouver), Vancouver Public Library (Vancouver), Art Metropole (Toronto), and was voted to be in the Or Gallery’s Top Ten Artist Book Publications for 2014.

    A letter was sent out to all the Hammock Residents letting them know that this publication was being made, and to submit something if they wanted to be included. I had wanted everyone to be able to apply, to have an open net to all Hammock Residency participants, and avoid a hierarchical curatorial selecting process, on my part. The folks who responded were published in Hammock Thoughts: With Love From The Hammock 2006-2013, which was designed by Jaz Halloran, and edited and published through Project Space (a project ran by Jaz Halloran and Tracy Stefananucci), and released, as an artist in residence at the Vancouver Art/Book Fair (which was also run by Jaz Halloran and Tracy Stefanucci). Hammock Thoughts: With Love From The Hammock, 2006-2013 was a small run of 50, which sold out during the VA/BF. Half went to Project Space, and half went to Hammock Residency.

    Bennie Allain – October to December 2014

    Bennie Allain rolled in fresh from the maritimes, with a smoke in his hand, and his mind on the skillet for the next venison steak he’d fry up. Working on drawings endlessly, he filled the Hammock with love, laughter, creativity, generosity, and a deep shared studio vibe. The living room transformed into a full on studio made of sawhorses from Mireille Rosner’s and my collaborative performances, and the 4×6’ panels I had made for Sweaty Bones. He brought an old world swagger into our lives, and made us all laugh. 

    Annie Chiavarolli – January 2012 to December 2014

    Bam Bam (previously known as Annie Chivarolli), 2012-2014

    Bam Bam was both a hammock resident, and she rented a studio at the hammock. First, the little room, then the front room. She would wake up early, meditate, and then draw. She listened to everyone. Was quick to understand. Slow to judge. Canned everything. She now lives on Quadra in a tiny home she built herself on an eco commune. Living the life.

    Jenny Lee Craig – January to December 2014

    In 2014 Jenny came back to do a research + development residency for a project she later did in 2015 in Templeton Pool. Again using community members as actors, diy costuming, experimental sound tracks, and a bizarre visionary plot line this time titled FUTURE SMUGGLER: a story about a smuggler in the future. In this world, the polar ice caps have melted, and it’s only synchronized swimming mutant octopuses that can deliver the elixer which allows humans to change the toxic waters into drinkable waters.
