📝 Monthly Thematic
Studio Prompts: For Quiet + Shared Contemplations

So often we rush or are rushed to figure out the finish line.

We miss the Starting Line altogether.

Thus, it is here at the Starting Line that we begin.

The moment we are intentionally called to slow down and wait.
The moment that we have prepared ourselves for.

The moment when we trust ourselves.
And the capacity of our own work.

Thus, throughout this Reflective Residency, STUDIO PROMPTS are written into each post, as your Starting Line.

STUDIO PROMPTS are ideas, insights, and care plans used to sustain myself as a Queer, Neuro-Divergent (Autistic / ADHD) & Disabled Social Practice Artist, Writer, and Community Organizer.

Built up from my lived experience from working on ways to care for and carry myself over the past 10+ years.

They are my guideposts when I get angry, experience physical or emotional dysregulation, experience brain fog, pain flares, and forget, deny or push away my own mental, emotional, relational, and physical needs, and even that I have them.

Reminding our working practices that we are emotional beings, with a full spectrum of life that exists outside integral to our creative work.

Reminding our very Bodies,
that we can’t separate our Bodies from our bodies of work.

STUDIO PROMPTS are designed for you too; journal, comment directly on the post, record an audio/video, save for later and reflect in your own ways and pacing, or do nothing at all.

Honoring that however you learn, your Body of Knowledge is the Starting Line to our own curiosities and contemplations.

It is through these reflections I hope you too see yourself and the needs you require for a sustainable life career by honoring your capacities, limits, and boundaries at your daily check-in.

Focusing on your wellness at the center – with your capacity and limitations of each changing day, made known.
It is here we start.

With a Pause of Togetherness.
In Trust. In Patience.
At the Slow-Full,
Starting Line.

Slow-Fully Yours,

Taryn Goodwin

1 / 75 MULTI-GENERATIONAL LEARNING. (2011-2013)

NIC School of Fine Art & Design was an Art School for students of all ages. It was a place where lived experience, had life. And it was my first experience in the arts.

From 42-year-old engineers driven to change careers, to 60-year-old retired nurses, and single parents doing one course at a time, to 17-year-olds living at home, right out of high school. The classroom was peers, peering into different lives from their own.

It has since left a lasting impression.

It was a vision of a new school. A community classroom.

A place where life, intersects through the ages.

A place where the stories told were mentorships of their own.

It shaped my longing to discover how to share community.
To be in community.
To be part of community.

– T

🎈STUDIO PROMPT: YOURS IN COMMUNITY

How would having multi-generational classrooms, community workshops, Master Programs, PHDs, and campus communities change the culture of learning?

How can we establish multi-generational learning and mentorships in our creative + life networks?

Who would you be willing and able to mentor?
Who would you like to mentor you?

How can your next talk, workshop, or event encourage an exchange between the ages?

2 / 75 NEVER A FINISHED NARRATIVE (2012)

A high contracts white dining room chair, with a stark black background. The chair has three legs, and one armrest. It is painted white, has a padded seat and back rest, and has markings of words over the chair in marker.

When we give ourselves permission to revisit the past with our current agency and strength we can begin to enter a new narrative.

One that positions grief, as part of the telling.

One that makes room for anger, as a throughline.

One that steps into the quiet spaces of our lonely longing and allows it to show up in the room of our hearts.

One that doesn’t skip to the good parts.
But settles into the injustices of abandonment and neglect.

One that gives us permission to be hurt, herding back together the parts of ourselves that have since long been so scattered.

With parts of ourselves missing, we start to feel that loss as we recognize our desires for more.

It is a deep longing to reacquaint with our natural wholeness, with the sturdy function of care and compassion.

In recognizing The Structures that hold us, could never hold us up.

By creating structures of care that work for us,
we re-invent the posture of possibility.

Of a gentle, slow-full opening – ready when we are.

– T

🎈STUDIO PROMPT:

What structure of function, no longer functions for you?

What story placed upon you by others, not of your own is taking up too much space and no longer wants to be revisited? How can you set a boundary with those interpretations of who you no longer are.

How can you make yourself feel 2% more comfortable in this very moment?

How can you recognize that in doing so, you already know the very parts of what you need?

September 2 2022

3 / 75 THE ASSIGNMENT OF OPPOSITION (2011)

Three Black and white photos graphs of a house, on top of a clear velum, with pencil drawings of street maps, directions and navigation tools.

I remember being asked to create a drawing that was in complete opposition to my current impulses.

To work against my own grain.

To challenge my intuitive go-to practices, styles and rhythms.

To see what would happen if nothing about this process was a yes – but actually a no.

To stand at the edges of your own comfortability and forgo the urge to run.

But to slow-fully move towards, verse to run with abandonment.

– T

🎈STUDIO PROMPT:

What would doing the complete opposite of your current process, teach you about the meaning of your practice?

How would it help strengthen the awareness of what matters to you?

What would that look like?

How can you measure the differences?

How can this process be made into a personal learning chart and a graph of understanding for the delicate and flexible details of knowing yourself?

4 / 75 DIFFERENT SURFACES (2012)

The surfaces that you work on have a story of their own.

What story would be told, or needs to be told – only made available through a surface that has a different texture, quality, and tactical relationship?

Do you typically work with canvas?
Paper and Pen? Fabric? Thread?
Ceramics? Fiber Arts? Digital Art?

What would it be like to actively question your medium of choice?

– T

🎈STUDIO PROMPT:

What is one new surface you can practice expanding your untold, and emerging stories on?

What is one material you are called to?

Perhaps because it scares you?
Or holds deep intimate meaning for you?

Is it a thrifted material?
Is it re-purposing an object in your home?
Is it something you buy from an art or hardware store?

Whatever it is,
this object holds a story for you
and it’s yours to tell.

5 / 75 UNBOUND (2012)

Scale, pressure, the wall of support.

And the “Creative Wall”.
That block of mental and emotional wayfinding.

What happens when we explore leaning in?

To push against the very tensions we are feeling.
To exert energy towards, verse away, the thing we are fearing.

To physically lean/push on the surfaces around us with great depth and present the physical relationship with our work and our Bodies.

Let the Creative Wall feel you present.

Let the Creative Wall feel your presence.

A large painting of a non-gendered, naked figure from the shoulders down. No hands, feet, or gentiles are showing.

Let the Creative Wall also know,
that you will walk away and come back when you are ready.

That you are not leaving it,
but coming back more prepared for your exchange.

That you are both allowed to take a break.

To have grace enter your relationship.
To be in a more regulated state of care.
To care for one another in a more present way.
To take the time it requires to communicate with clarity.

– T

🎈STUDIO PROMPT:

Maybe it is your wall? Or the floor? Or your bed?

6 / 75 WAYFINDING (2013)

When something doesn’t work the way you like it, do you give up?

What happens if, within that frustration, lies boredom?
Or the fear of having to learn.

Wayfinding a path into one’s curiosity and exploring how one best learns by making their own way through the learning curve is a series of explorations.

A series of explorations questioning the ways we are taught, to learn.

A series of explorations investigating our big emotions and our refusal to try, as we sift through the guilt, shame, and embarrassment of our executive functioning and meltdowns.

A series of explorations, creating gentle on-ramps for ourselves to start at the pace of our necessity. To begin at the state only we are comfortable with and nothing more. To find what that is.

To start from a place of, “But, I can do this..” verse “I couldn’t ever imagine myself doing…”

To find our starting line.

– T

🎈STUDIO PROMPT:

Where can you give boredom, the gift of novelty?

What is one thing you can add, or invite into the said task ahead of you, to make it more comfortable/exciting?

7 / 75 ACCEPTANCE (2013)

Is there something about your MindBody you wish didn’t exist the way it does?

Perhaps it’s the way your Body shouts when you feel others only whisper. Or how it feels silent, and oh so loud.

Accepting the way our MindBodies participate in this world and thus in our studio practices are essential reminders.

It is the care we require daily in the mixing bowl of uncertainty.

When one day feels like a 10/10 and the next is below 0.
For days on end. With all the highs and lows in between.

Maybe also like me, part-time or less – is your full-time.

Maybe you and I are meant to be fully here, in our own time.

In our Full Time.

– T

🎈PROMPT:

Can you accept that today is hard?
Like really, really hard.

What can you do to give yourself permission to hurt and be angry?

What is the first word that you write down when you think about being angry?

Where does your rage lead you?

Where is the rage in your Body? Does it have something it wants to say to you? Can you listen? Will you listen?

Building towards a common goal with others is one of the most energizing, enthusiastic things the unbound joy your body can feel!

It takes details, the big picture, a bird’s eye view, and the connections of all the pieces working with passionate people who are all part of something bigger, and each hold significant value.

To celebrate and showcase one another, and each other’s hard work.

To skillshare between different organizing skills.

To set limits and boundaries about what you can and can’t take on. To delegate with boundaries and capacities.

Community is the gift of Staying.

The gift of making it through the struggle together.

Of celebrating the victory, collectively together!

It is hard work of interpersonal relating, as an art and a practice.

11 / 75 UNCOVERING (2013)

Lying about our needs, as they lay on top of us.

Surfaces, unseen.

Skin, contact, pressure.

Pain made visible.
Bodies made known.

And yet we so often are conditioned to deny, our ebbs and our flows. Forgetting our existence is fluctuating.
Pretending to exist in the Bodies we do.

We conform to social scripts helping ableism thrive.

We are scared to be others’ worst nightmare,
so we show up anyways.

Not giving in, but giving up on our true nature
– the nature to rest and be at ease.

When we lay with ourselves, unmasking our very truths
we notice how hard we have been pushing.
How different we wish we could be.

How far we have squandered our ability to be gentle with ourselves.

We turn towards expressions of doing right by others but forget the right we have to do what is right for ourselves.

We take time and contort it.
Wrapped around pain, we blur it.
Focused on the tears, we forget to fully feel.

We deny our existence is hard because we forget to fully see it.

In this, may we all be reminded that we exist beyond this very moment, that we are more than this flare-up, this manic episode, this crash of depression and whorling anxieties.

We exist beyond the pressure we can’t seem to release.

We exist.

– T

🎈STUDIO PROMPTS:

In what ways do you best exist?

What pace feels most sustainable for you?
How can you measure it?

Have you been practicing that pace lately?

What areas of your life need to slow down or pick up?

Where can you let others in?

What support do you need today?

13 / 70 ROLL THE DICE.

A abstract figurative painting, on a tiny white square raising the painting off the ground. On top of the painting, on the right side is a small circular styrofoam painting. In the corner of a gallery with white walls and room to walk behind.

Sometimes you have to take a chance on life.

To find ways that feel playful AND risky.

To engage in intrigue and excitement again.

To notice when the mundane scripts of how to… are slowing the pulse of our very heart.

Sometimes we have to roll the dice and let it guide us.

INSTRUCTIONS:

6 Sides of a Dice can equal any equation we set for it.

Roll a 1? Make one phone call to a dear friend!

Role a 4? Take four deep breaths.

Role a 5? Try 5mins of doing something you don’t want to do, knowing you can handle 5 mins of discomfort and resistance.

Each day you can create a new set of chances for your life!

And perhaps, it’s also in your studio!

A studio shot of work in progress of the two abstract figurative paintings on easels, one for each side. With a table of paints, notebook, and brushes.

For this work, each number responded to one of six paintbrushes, and a second die to 1-6 colors for that day.

The number the dice landed on, told me what brush to paint with and the second roll of the dice told me how many brush strokes to make, or how many minutes to paint for.

What will you take a chance on today?

STUDIO PROMPT:

“What would you correspond the 6 numbers with?” #CommentBelow #YourIdeas

INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Find a pair of dice, perhaps from a board game or the dollar store.

2. Bring it into your studio, or common living area, or to a project you are working on.

3. Roll the dice, have it correspond to 1-6 Actions you want to take, and with the time/amount you want to do it for! That could be mins, hours, or seconds.

4. You can write them out beforehand using a legend, or trust at the moment you will know what it means.

5. Think of your goals, daily habits, community connections, and what brings you peace of mind and heart.

Let the unknown, the spontaneity of chance, and the internal balance of awareness all be in playful relations in their belonging together.

14 / 75 PERMISSION TO REST.

A person lying down on the ground, on a cement studio floor with a pillow under their head looking up into a tent-shaped form made out of wood.

How often do we let ourselves purposefully slow down in public?

To rest.

To take that open sit.

To find a quiet corner.

To grab the extra back cushion at our favorite cafe.

To notice, we can be more comfortable.

To notice, we are allowed to be more comfortable.

To notice, we are allowed to be comforted.

– T

🎈STUDIO PROMPT:

How can you create more deliberate and intentional rest spots for your audiences in the creation of your work?

How can you acknowledge the Body of Knowledge and comfort during each interaction you have?

How will you choose to slow down today?

How are Slow-Full practices built into your work?

Some ways just don’t work for us.

No matter how much we’re told they should.

Writing and editing an essay, a short story, or a poem on a computer or even on sheets of paper stapled at the top doesn’t always register with our understanding and capacities to see and built into our learning abilities.

Your Body is Not a Learning Disability.

Sometimes it takes a new way, to find our way.

Sometimes being a learner means learning how to learn.

And challenging the way we think learning is done.

This work is based on how I edit essays, project proposals, and artist grants.

It allows my Body of Knowledge to physically cut, forum, crumple, rearrange and toss pieces of paper.

My hands become the editor, my Body the Wayfinder.

It gives me permission and the accountability to use the intuitive process of my Body as an editor.

To cut paragraphs into sentences, to see the run-on lines more readily, to note the gaps in content physically, and to feel empowered to re-arrange the work off screen and into physical reality.

To give Your eyes a break.

To turn Your Body on.

15 / 75 BECOMING SOFT

How has the quicked World, hardened our hearts?

How has it given us internal doubt when taking rest or are forced to do so from our own Bodies?

How has the frantic pace of life, become the standard?

How does it keep going, when another pace is possible?

How is it possible, that we already know this other pace?

How can a shift so pivotal, tell us a tale so profound?

How can you embrace both Worlds? The Slow and the Full.]

September 8 2022

15 / 75 THE HELPERS.

What help can you ask for today?
What areas of your life do you need assistance with?
What task, feels too small to get support on?

It is here, in the dishes, in receiving help to tie our shoes, in peeling an orange, in hanging a picture, in walking our dogs, in asking for a cooked meal, in asking for a hug – we change.

We change in the power of being surrounded by the profound mundane love that embraces our pride and seeks comfort for our shame.

Each task spoken or signed into the breath between two hearts is a moment of healing, connection, of reciprocity – when spoons are shared, and care is embodied.

When being in your body feels neutral.
Not a burden, or a hero.
But an equation that doesn’t equal worth.

We all need help.
Today, try asking someone to pass you a pen.
Start small, and smaller still.
Build your foundation.
The muscle of voice builds over time.

Knowing nothing is required in return.

That you are allowed to receive care, without needing to be injured.

That you are allowed to receive care, without keeping score.

- T

Years can pass before; events, decisions, or circumstances make sense.

Until the dots of time, connect themselves.
Until you see the dots, through the string of time.

We collect memories and experiences without knowing that one day their relationship with appear.

We built without knowing we are building.
We approach life with the happenings at our fingertips, unaware of them happening.

And one day, it all happens.

We ponder the space between the thoughts that brought this very moment together.

We awe at the passages of depth and shallows between.

We wonder if another hour or min, or city, or class, or train was taken how different our lives would be.

We see life in a series of split seconds.
For the moments we tried again when wanting to give up.
When we listened to that intuitive pulse of love, to take a left or to stay a little longer, or leave when we felt called – that knowing within that carries us further than our calendars could ever know.

It is here, that we see the infinite dots, and wonder.

It moves quicker than words.

It acts faster than intended.

It moves beyond the now.

It lifts us into action, not of anger or fear, but quietly with assertive place-making, knowing that we belong for change.

We place ourselves beyond plans, and into the planet.

We find ourselves above ourselves,
in awe of our becoming home.

There is an art to gathering, to listening, to witnessing questions unfold.

To hold space inwardly, and expand space for others externally.

The gathering doesn’t mean an event or meet up in-person.
It can mean in memory.

Or through digital, online communities and dear friends, you’ve never met in person. Or in asynchronous ways of care and connection.

Gathering isn’t limited to mean, people at the same time.

To the Bodies that have been bullied by the medical system, lost in language that isn’t our own, this poem is for you.

“The Slower My Pen Moved”

“The slower my pen moved,
the more details of My Body I could feel.
As the ink hugged the page, softly in a rhythm of it’s own.
It turned an invisible pain, visible.

The in—dents traced to the paper were no accident.
Using My Body as a map to visually navigate,
“So, how intense is your pain today?”

I could look at the drawings born from closed eyes, traced along the meridians of pain throughout my nervous system and could describe

TRANSLATE

TELL ME MORE

FOR HOW LONG

Do you remember the first time?

More accurately and more compassionately than any doctor’s visit, pain management chart, or medically documented language I was prescribed to use, label and record my symptoms post head injury, turned nerve damage, turned fibromyalgia turned, over and over in my mind, as I fought over and over with my Body— I finally realized, I was told to understand something using a language I could never hear from over there.

Reciting the lines hand-drawn from My Own Body,
I could finally talk.

Mark making became a way to communicate what did not, what could not, come when asked to speak.

Eyes closed, I listened to the radiating pain, where it was coming from, and the stories held beneath.

And from a slowness that almost stopped,

armed with blue ink as my counselor and guide, I traced My Body to paper.

It’s not in any Student Guide Book, Program Evaluation, or Intake Form. It’s part of the Hidden Academic Agenda.

It’s beyond the ableist/capitalist
FULL TIME or PART TIME models.

It’s inventing a new world of mindful work.
It’s situated in YOUR FULL TIME.
No matter what that looks like.

Why aren’t these options of care, made more readily available?

What can you do to find out the different options for your studies? Ask. Request. Lean in. Try on. Practice Newness.

“Can I just take one course at a time?”

🎈STUDIO PROMPT:
What is that one thing you can do today, that is single action – without any interruptions? What is your, One thing at a time?

Remember, it doesn’t need to be completed just given undivided attention today. One minute at a time. Create that space. Let it feel spacious.

37 / 75 BEING HELD (2016)

A bright yellow piece of paper filled with 37 listed items, typed in old school typewriter font. The first one says "self care is integral to all you do". The list reads as a directive for how to take care of oneself in the face of difficulty.

“The Ideal School Project” was built from friendship and the gift of active listening. Thank you to @__aliwest, who gave me permission to express myself freely, on the balcony of the Granville Island South Building in between the hope of tears, fears, and a future unfolding.

They took notes from my flow of consciousness capturing my own relationship with institutional learning. The one I wanted.
And wanted to be part of making happen.

It began a guidepost in my work, from the way it was built.

She was a note-taker of the Soul, which I couldn’t capture on my own.
Ali typed up my thoughts and presented this yellow scroll back to me as an ethic of our relationship. It was a profound act of togetherness. Better together.

It was made from the intimacy of attending to the heart giving a time capsule of someone’s life at the time. To which I am forever grateful, and still moved by to this day.

How can you re-gift the voices of those around you?

How can friendship be at the centre of a working methodology?

How can Neuro-Divergent learning styles be part of the creative process?

 – T

🎈STUDIO PROMPT:
If your life had a philosophy, what would it be?

What would that philosophy look like as a list?

Black text on a light grey background reads:
Fall 2016. Dropped out of University.
Questioning Academic Culture."

When you notice you are pushing water uphill, it’s time to go.

Be it a project, a relationship, a school, or
a self-prescribed identity.

It’s time to shift, pivot, and try again without the struggle at the center of that relationship.

It’s not giving up, it’s letting go.

What can you drop in your life,
so you can make room for more ease?

39 / 75 TEACHING (2018)

A black background, with white text in all cap locks that reads; "Your Body is Not A Learning Disability."

If I could give one lesson over and over to a group of students and lifelong learners it would be this;

“Your Body Is Not A Learning Disability”

The way you learn is not wrong.
The time you take is not a defect of the default.

You were never taught how your Mind / Body thinks!

So you aren’t aware your own intelligence exists.

Together we can learn to achieve awareness of how you learn.

And we get to practice this together.

2016-2020. Moved to Vancouver Island. Returning to slowness

Thinking of the last 5 years, what has been a pivot life has surprised you with?

Where are you now in a positive area of your life that you couldn’t have imagined 5 years ago.

How can we deliberately connect the dots back to this very;
event, relationship, goal, project, location that made today possible?

How has that one choice years ago significantly impacted your life today? How can we watch the unfolding of our own life, on replay?

A large grey scale monochromatic abstract painting hanging in the buyers home. Large drips, brush strokes, and expressive body sized movements via paint brush (and possibly other mark making devices) hang elegantly above a couch. First slide is an installation shot, the second is a detailed shot.

How can you give up control?
Where can you reduce the pressure to be in control?
When can you see that being useful?

Often we figure we must do it ourselves.
On our own. With no one watching.
Or that we have to figure out all the pieces to a puzzle before we hand it off to someone else.

70 / 70 SCALE YOUR JOY. (2022)

When was the last time you made from your enthusiastic joy?
For the sake of joy. Play. Wonderment?!

What is the last moment, you can remember that you let yourself follow that tiny spark of awe to see where else it went and could take you?

That you gave up control.
And you scaled your joy.

STUDIO PROMPT:

What would happen if you started small, on a big idea?”

What is the smallest step you can possibly take towards that goal today?

Cut that idea in half, and in half again – start there.

How would you break down the idea of bigger is better, and give yourself permission to play with less is more?”

Thank you for being with me across my Hammock Residency Journey.

For stimming, shaking, rocking, talking, and being embodied!

For being curious, and reading the prompts for journaling where it felt right, and when it also felt hard.

This work, takes dedication and commitment to yourself.

Thank you for making that a part of your day.

To continue this journey through an audio-based practice, and get the conversation via Podcast tuned for a new series called: “Hammock Residency” through the Hi, Body! Podcast.

The link to all Hi, Body! episodes will be posted in the LinkTree once available.

Until then!

Yours in slow-full organizing,
