I am Matty Harris; a partner, father of 3 kids and a settler located on and near the unceded lands and waters of the Tsleil-Waututh, Musqueam and Squamish peoples.
Thank you to Heidi and the Hammock for inviting me to do a residency. As a multi-disciplinary artist I am interested in sound, nature, decolonization, curation, community, accessibility, justice, semi-permanent autonomous zones, radio, solidarity, dance, holding and providing space & chaos. Over the month of March I will share past and present projects, art spaces, festivals, events and art I have participated in and or created.

Fuktek was a noise/experimental project that existed online & in the bedroom of the other member Chris. Made in 2002-2003 on PC using soundforge, acid pro & fruity loops. Our intent was to distort the software and make it glitch to our satisfaction. We never played live with the exception of online festivals which at that time were fairly basic but were exciting to be a part of. They were hosted by artists mostly in Europe. One of note paired artists with a complimentary act virtually and they would play live together without any rehearsal or much knowledge of the others style. I lost touch with Chris and the artist behind Gnosis over the years but for a time we explored the occult, extreme music amongst other things. At this point of my musical life I had abandoned the jungle/drum and bass scene for more extreme sounds especially black metal, harsh noise, drill and bass, breakcore and drone. I would come back to this art form with the cajoling of @tusk32 for the legendary Bloodound shows Tusk produced in the basement of @redgateartssociety first location under the moniker Steppin’ Razor.

Installation in the front of @toastcollective for Sh’Bang! Festival 2015? Sh’Bang is an amazing festival at the Lookout! Arts Quarry near Bellingham. I have participated as a performer many times over the years. It’s my favourite festival to play and attend. One year I decided to advertise for it in Vancouver using the toast. It was a fun little project.

part of my art practice has been operating art spaces over the last 10+ years – this is the @toastcollective a small but mighty community hub for many folks. I’ve been helping it go since 2016. it’s still a place thanks to the work of many folks, too many to mention here.

it has been my pleasure working alongside Constantine Katsiris (@harsh_walls) as the Technical Director and fellow Curator of the ongoing series @quietcityvancouver •
over the last two decades I’ve had the luck being able to produce many many shows but working with the the crew (con & Jaewoo @jijijijijijijiij & Jameson (@lazyjimsadsong) has been a definite highlight. being able to consistently bring international talent is a privilege. so many amazing nights of every type of music imaginable all under the guise of experimental – which means anything. thank you to all the incredible hosts, artists, crew and staff of the many venues we’ve presented at. we’re currently on hiatus but we will be back.
